The world-famous business reality show Shark Tank is coming to Nepal, with its official announcement made at Everest Hotel on Monday. Himalaya TV, the franchise holder, plans to broadcast the show within a few months.
The first season will feature five prominent judges (Sharks): Hemraj Dhakal (Co-founder of IME Group), Cabinet Shrestha (Founder of Agni Group), Ritu Singh Vaidya (Director of Vaidya Organization), Anand Bagaria (Managing Director of Nimbus Group), and Saurabh Jyoti (Director of Jyoti Group). Two guest Sharks will join in future episodes.
Originally launched in Japan in 2001 as Money Tigers, the show has grown into the world’s leading business reality TV program, with Shark Tank Nepal becoming the 54th franchise globally.
During the ceremony, executives from Sony Television London and members of Shark Tank India congratulated Himalaya TV via video messages. Himalaya TV’s Executive Director, Shyam Kandel, explained that while the agreement with Sony was made three years ago, the show was delayed due to COVID-19 and economic challenges. He highlighted the show’s aim to celebrate entrepreneurship and inspire respect for businesses.
Sonika Bhasin, Vice President of International Distribution for South Asia at Sony Pictures Television, expressed excitement about bringing Shark Tank to Nepal following its success in India, Bangladesh, and Pakistan. She emphasized the show’s impact in empowering entrepreneurs and inspiring millions with stories of innovation and determination.
The show has opened applications for entrepreneurs seeking investments in exchange for equity or loans. Nepali entrepreneurs looking to expand their businesses can apply via Himalaya TV’s app or website by January 15, 2025.
Directed by Simes Sunuwar of Himalaya Roadies fame, the first season will consist of 20 episodes featuring pitches from 100 entrepreneurs. The judges are expected to secure investments worth NPR 35-40 crore for participating businesses.
Filming will commence at Everest Hotel in New Baneshwor this February, with the show expected to air within three months. Himalaya TV has a strong portfolio of international reality shows like The Voice of Nepal, The Voice Kids, and Himalaya Roadies, with plans to launch Nepal’s Next Top Model later this year.
